The main character is John West. He is from Vermont, however he has lived in Georgia for several years after marrying a Southern Belle. This caused his family to basically disown him. As the Civil War began he had already decided to remain loyal to his new family, despite knowing that a war between the Northern and Southern states would be a long and bloody battle with the North being the likely winner. He fought bravely with the units he was assigned to, despite the fact that the Southern Government and the military did not trust him. He was only given the rank of Lieutenant, despite being a Colonel before the war. Now, returning home on leave, to be assigned to a different unit being formed, his home is burned down and his family is thrown into the fire still alive. He was left outside after being shot and believed to be dead. Now the question becomes, what happens now?
